Some of the most thrilling and enjoyable holidays have come from taking a cruise holiday out to the Mediterranean. Going to the best places in Europe, you have the chance to see some beautiful sights, from Italy’s capital city of Rome to the small Greek island of Santorini. Of course the best holidays are determined by how you spend it and with plenty to do on board as well as at the destination; you’ll soon have a break to remember.
There isn’t an ideal way of deciding which one of the Mediterranean cruises are best for you but with any of these countries being fantastic options, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Venice
Starting off on our top five Mediterranean destinations is Italy’s very own city of romance, Venice. Known for its long and peaceful canals, narrow streets with no cars and stunning architecture, this is the perfect place to relax and take in the sights. Three of the best attractions can be seen in one square: Basilica di San Marco, a world-famous cathedral church; Doge’s Palace and Torre dell’Orologio, the city clock tower.
The most wonderful aspect of Venice is the limitation of cars in and around the city. This means walking, cycling and public transportation is the way to go, keeping disruptions to a minimum. Branded as the city that floats, over 400 bridges and 170 boat canals, as well as hundreds of city-famous gondolas combine to connect Venice. This certainly provides a scenic as well as convenient mode of transport.
Dubrovnik
One of the go-to destinations in Croatia, the ‘enclosed city’ provides a great atmosphere of seclusion as 24-meter high walls surround the area. Dating back to the 13th-century, the people of Dubrovnik built it as a guard against invasion from Turkey and it has remained ever since. With a historical presence in landmarks such as Rector’s Palace and City Museum and War Photo Limited, a gallery of post-war outcomes, the feeling of antiquity is definitively captured.
Not just to do with buildings in the past, the view over the town and its host of beaches make this a family fun-filled zone. If you’re lucky enough to go during the warmer months, the city stages Dubrovnik Summer Festival, bringing some of Shakespeare’s plays back to life at the Lovrjenac Fortress and also performing cultural dances, theater and opera shows near the Old Town.
Mykonos
This is one hot-spot for young adults and teenagers as the party never stops on the Greek island of Mykonos. Known to be one of the world’s most popular adult play-lands, there is no shortage of parties, alcohol and dance clubs. Naturally this isn’t the place to go for some peace and quiet but rather one to lose all inhibitions and have a fun night out. Cava Paradiso host parties from 1am to a staggering 8:30am so sleeping beforehand is essential.
Nevertheless, there is more to the island than just a relentless amount of drinking and partying as stepping away from the lively scene can reveal more responsible activities to pursue. Scuba-diving and exploring underwater are allowed in Mykonos, making it one of the very few islands in Greece to permit these events. You can also hop on a boat tour and scour the sights with an option to make it a day-long experience.
Corsica
A French island located in the Mediterranean Sea, mountains cover two-thirds of the island making it one of a kind to travel to. Nothing beats natural beauty than the Bavella Mountains which provide the perfect setting for adrenaline-seeking hikers. With a chance to see some wonderful sights as well as keep active, through rock-climbing, paragliding and even canoeing, the locals of Corsica are the envy of France.
The capital Ajaccio provides a different collection of activities and was the birthplace of famous French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte. There you can discover the home of his childhood as well as the town he grew up in. Now dedicated to a variety of restaurants, vibrant stores and fishing boats, Ajaccio is the place to be for exploration.
You may find yourself wanting to explore more than just one Mediterranean destination and with options to take a 14-day cruise of some the cities from Royal Caribbean Cruise, this could be the perfect choice for you.
